Crawford Market, Mumbai
2018
A community rooftop farm, started in 2012, through a kickstarter fundraiser and collaboration between the Carrimjee family and Adrienne Thadani. The urban farm grows over 70 varieties of fruits, herbs and vegetables, and was set up to be a teaching space and urban farming research lab. The location was especially important, as it is located on top of a 100 year old building in one of the most densely trafficked parts of Mumbai.
Over the years Flyover Farm has hosted over 3,000 volunteers who have participated in a range of gardening experiences, workshops and events.
The rooftop farm also serves as an outdoor activity space for the building’s residents. In addition to harvesting the produce grown on the farm, residents use the garden for morning works, a senior citizen exercise class, an afterschool play area and ten families have taken up composting. The residents compost their kitchen waste which is then used in the garden.
